Hi All
Had 2 great games of Missile Threat today with
my friend Takis.
Both were strike missions (as per the missions
in the book).
I was the NVA protecting an airfield with
2x Mig-17PF
1x Mig-21 PFM (2x R-13M missiles)
3x light AA guns
1x SA-2 sam site + radar
Takis had the USAA with
1x A-4F (guided missiles + Bombs)
2x F-5 (AAM + Bombs)
We made our plans (flight plan) and I set up
the ground units as per the rules
the first planes to come in were 2x Mig-17PF
and 1x A-4F all of which were a bit slow even at speed 6
Second turn and the 2x F-5 came in as to engage the Mig-17s.
Third turn and the final plane came in the
Mig-21
as we had not played the game in a bit (due to
Covid) we overshoot each other.
In turn five the A-4 fired its guided missiles
at the ground radar but it got a lock on the A-4 as well and 2 SA-2 missiles
were launched.
The Mig-17s using their 90 turn rate managed to
get on the tale of the US planes but one failed to pass the pilot test and the
other missed with its guns.
The Mig-21 fires both of its missiles and one actually
launched but the F-5 evaded it easily.
The F-5 in turn attempted to get in position as
to fire back but could not get in position
In Turn 6 (Mig-21 was to go home at the end of
the turn)
the missiles from the A-4 and from the SA-2 all
found home. The radar was destroyed as was the A-4 (pilot ejected safely)
The first F-5 dropped bombs on the airfield and
the Mig-17 got in position to hit the F-5 that was bombing the airfield causing
damage to it. The other F-5 got on the tale of the Mig-21 and fired missiles
(one launched) that hit the Mig-21 causing injury to the pilot.
Turn 7
the Mig-21 went home with the injured pilot.
The Mig-17s managed to hit the damaged F-5
again (destroying it) while the other F-5 dropped it bombs on the airfield.
We finished the game at that point
The US had lost one A-4 and one F-5
The NVA had lost one radar and the airfield had been hit by 24 bombs. The damaged Mig-21 landed safely.
We replayed the mission but on the second game
the NVA did much better.
After the games we talked about the AA missiles that did not do much. My
oponent said next time he would send in the F-5 to take the Migs down and the
A-4 to enter after turn 3 or 4. The ground assets (light AA guns) were not to
be feared.
