MEG Maximus

Hi All

Had 2 great games of MEG Maximus in the weekend Second game was my Syracusan vs Later Republican Romans.

I had lots of heavy foot Hoplites some Gaul's and some Numidians while my opponent had lots of Legionaries (8 TUgs), 1 Tug of Thracians and 3 Sugs of skirmish horse archers .

I was out scouted and set up first.
We Had no terrain features on the table.

I put my Numidian ally on my left while my foot was in a line, I kept the Greek cavalry in reserve on my right just in case. My opponent put his infantry in line opposite to my foot and his horsemen on my right.

Round 1

My opponent moved his line up while he moved his skirmish horse to start taking shots at my Hoplites. I moved my Ally to his exposed flank (my left) and started shooting at him. We both had shield cover so we did not expect much from the shooting (skilled jav for me & catabrian bow for him).

Round 2

Romans continued to move up while i started falling back with my foot in the center. My opponents sides started getting exposed as I was moving my foot on my right and I was pushing his skirmish horse back.

Round 3

My shooting payed off and his first Tug of Romans on my left was gone. But his infantry was ready to charge me. I had moved my Greek horse in position and he had to stop one of his Tugs (the Thracians).

Round 4

The Romans charged in with 4 superior Tugs and some average ones. The impact was in the Romans favor but i only took some hits (nothing to bad). In the Melee that followed nothing conclusive happened. On the other parts of the field my shots took out another Tug of Romans and the Greek horse charged the loose Thracians in the open.

Round 5

My opponent lost the Thracians and was not able to break through my foot. The Greek cavalry was ready to charge his flanks while the Numidians were in position to charge the other sides flank as well.

At this point my opponent gave up.

MEG Maximus

Hi All

Had 2 great games of MEG Maximus in the weekend first game was my Syracusan vs Achaemenid Persian.

I had lots of heavy foot Hoplites some Gaul's and some Numidians while my opponent had some mixed foot (4 tugs if I counted correctly) and lots of cavalry.

I was out scouted and set up first.
I had a woods on my left and the Gaul foot (flexible) was placed in it, my Hoplites took the center (all had shield cover) and on my right I placed my Numidian ally.

The enemy had his foot in the center (way back) cavalry on the left and lots of cavalry on the right.

We started the battle with me pressing with the Gauls and the infantry while the Numidia's were trying to hold the right. My opponent (An experienced wargamer) was pressing on my right while his left was waiting to see what the Gaul's would do.

Round 2

We started the shooting and it was very effective on both sides my Numidians killed off 2 bases of an enemy SUG in the first round of shooting, while my Gaul's started taking hits and I lost a base.

Round 3

Some Persian cavalry charged into a Tug of Gaul's (they were in loose order) while my Numidian nobles (in Tug formation) along with some Hoplites charged some Persian cavalry.

The shooting from both sides continued.

Round 4

I lost a Tug of Gaul's from the cavalry and I also lost some Greek cavalry that tried to help them. On the up side I destroyed a Sug and a Tug of cavalry.

Round 5

Last round of the game and we were both very cautious I lost a Sug of Numidians

The game ended with a 1 point victory to the Persians. In retrospect I was very hesitant with my Hoplites. My opponents played a very good game.

MEG Maximus

Hi All

We have started gaming slowly now and my second MEG Maximus game pitted my Later Crusader vs Late Republican Roman.

I had 22 knights (most of them superior), mix foot, tourkopolous, and some bowmen

My roman friend had only foot (4 superior, 1 exceptional, and some average)

The Romans won the PBS battle and put some woods while I out scouted them.

The set up for me was easy my foot in the center while 2 tugs of knights and 1 tug of tourkopolous per side.

The Romans put a line of foot with the superior tug to pass via the woods and the average tug against my infantry.

TURN 1

The Romans moved forward I used my left side to attack and moved the Tourkopolous in skirmish mod forward in the wood (they don’t get affected in the wood) while 1 tug of superior knights passed the wood and headed for the rear.

TURN 2

My foot got in position to start shooting (black dice if shield cover is used) as to slow the roman foot advancing.

Lucky for me out of 8 dice I got 2 hits and 2 S

TURN 3

The Roman center kept on coming for my foot while I fell back (I had to manage my cards in the center as the instinctive commanders do not forgive)

My left was doing its job and the knights were ready to attack a lonely average tug guarding the camp.

More black dice shooting and some hits scored

TURN 4

We had the first charge (my knights in the rear), while my shooting (black dice) was doing some damage.

TURN 5

I launched my right cav and to attack and what a battle that was, in the charge and melee that followed I lost a knight Tug and my enemy lost an average foot TUG but his exceptional infantry was left with 3 bases.

I dismounted and charged the camp (forgot my dismounted knights and used the mounted bases as proxy).

And my shooting the center finally did the job and broke 2 average tugs of Romans (I was very lucky 12+ hits scored in 36 black dice).

My opponent gave me the game at that point as he had lost 4 average tugs and I was attacking his camp. His exceptional was left with 3 base and he actually only had 4 tugs of superior foot.

I was very lucky with the shooting and my opponent had used the terrain to his advantage but he had allowed me to pass from the left and it cost him a TUG and the camp

MEG Maximus

Hi All

After almost 2 months I had another game of MEG Maximus

My Later Carthage vs Later Crusaders

My army had

3x6 African spearmen

2x3 Elephants

3x6 Galatians Foot

1x6 Galatian Cav

2x6 Numidian light cav

3x6 Greek Hoplites (Ally)

1x4 Greek Cav (Ally)

My enemy came with

3x6 Sup Knights

1x4 Average Knights

4x6 Mix foot

2x6 Turkopolous (flex cav)

1x6 bowmen

We both went for an open battlefield with not much terrain.

I set up my foot in a line with the Galatians in some crops, while I kept the elephants in reserve to see where to use them. My Numidian’s and Galatian cav were in my open flank.

My opponent set his mix foot in the center, his knights on my left and his turkopolous on my right.

Turn 1

I was attacker and started by moving my foot (advance with shift) so as to make room for the elephants to pass. My Numidian’s and Galatians moved up as to exchange shoots with the Turkopolous. My enemy also moved his mixed foot up as to start shooting at me while some knights maneuvered to avoid the elephants.

 Turn 2

We both moved our forces and we were set for charges and shooting in round 3

Turn 3

We started with my elephants charging 6 sup knights (first time Iv used the elephants) while my opponent charged with 6 knights on the Galatian foot.

Needless to say the elephants wreaked havoc on the knights (I think 2,5 kills in the charge), the enemy knights against my foot were doing much better.

In the shooting the Numidian’s and Tuyrkopolous exchanged shooting (with the Numidian’s doing much better).

On another note the mixed foot managed to get a wound on every Tug the shoot at (even vs Hoplites with shield cover).

The Melee saw the knights destroyed by the elephants, while the Galatian foot was barely holding.

Turn 4

I charged the full length of the battle line.

The mix foot with the shoots caused some hits on my groups but I made it in.

The elephants after destroying the knights and the pursue move charged a second Tug of knights (I had only two elephants left in the Tug).

Again the elephants in the charge made many hits on the knights. My foot vs the mixed foot were not making much of a dent in the charge.

The Numidian’s on the other had had caused the Turkopolous many hits and were close to winging the shooting contest.

In the movement that followed the charge (my opponent had only 2-3 units not engaged in combat) I move some units around as to get in position for some flank charges.

The melee saw the Galatian foot Tug brake and the knights hitting a second group of Galatians. The Elephants destroyed the second group of Knights the met (the 2 elephants had taken a wound). While the battle lines were not doing much damage to each other (not fast enough)

Turn 5

The elephants (2 of them with a wound) were in range to charge the Tug of bowmen guarding the camp and I charged in, the shooting caused the one wound needed for the Tug to brake and I lost the first of my elephant Tugs (They had destroyed 2x6 Sup knights) destroyed by shooting from.

In the rest of the turn I managed to kill of the Turkopolous with shooting.

The knights destroyed my second group of Galatians

I managed to kill of 2 Tugs of mixed foot.

At that point my opponents army was destroyed.

A grate game after 2 months of no maximus.

My opponent was a great.

The match up (elephants vs knights) was not very good for the crusaders by they managed to kill of 3-4 of my Tugs in the game (not bad)

I was a bit reckless with the use of the elephants (charging them with no support) but it was my first time using them.
